CREAMS & GOLDS
Yes, we are moving along the colour spectrum. A very good friend of mine commissioned me to make her a necklace to match a watch and bracelet set she got from me previously, which was in gold, cream and silver hues. As she says, these colours just goes with absolutely anything she wears and makes it so versatile. So I came up with these two creations. Let's hope she will at least be fond of one them. As mentioned before, the necklaces are selling for R200 each. Should some of you Doing Lifers feel like spoiling yourselves, just let me know.

Off to learn a new jewellery technique on Monday.

GOING FOR THE 'GREEN' MAMBA
As most of you keen followers of Doing Life know by now, none of my featured jewellery contains any square beads (apart from when it is used as a pendant). I find it quite difficult to get my mind around using square beads. But in a way I was forced a little bit out of my comfort zone, by none other than the infamous 'Green Mamba'.
It is probably more than a year and a half ago, that the Green Mamba came to one of her scrapbooking classes with me in Kloof, Durban, South Africa, handing over two strands of green square beads over to 'Tha Teacha'. Tha Teacha got very vague specifications from the Green Mamba as to what kind of jewellery needed to be created with these square green beads, other than '... my daughter ... would like you to make something for her, using all these square green beads ...'. So needless to say, designs with square beads were put on the back burner for quite a while.
So just recently I attempted this design with some of the square beads and would like to get some feedback from the Green Mamba as to whether Tha Teacha is on the right track.

Suddenly, out of the blue, I am open to be challenged in more than one way. It all started this way .... a blogger from the UK, Jose, left a comment on DOING LIFE. STUCK ON BLACK & WHITE

- Wednesday, 23 July 2008

These are the latest two sets of black and white necklace/bracelet sets (R275 per set), I have completed. I think that these would go great with any 'must have' little black number in a lady's wardrobe. Onto another jewelery order, but this time in the theme of creams and golds.

Wikipedia's definition of beading:

"Beadwork is the art or craft of attaching beads to one another or to cloth using a needle and thread. Most beadwork takes the form of jewelry or other personal adornment, but beads are also used in wall hangings and sculpture. "

THE BOOK OF ME (BOM) {Challenge No.2: What's in a Name}
So, after quite a bit of intensive research in cyber space, I stumbled upon a few interesting facts regarding my first name, Desíre. The accent on the 'i' threw all the search engines for a loop, and was nowhere to be found. But with no further ado, here's the end result of all my searches:
******************
Unfortunately, I have never asked my belated foster parents (Roelof & Phoebe Walters) specifically how they came to my name. As far as I know my biological parents named me Desire (without the accent on the í ) and my foster parents added the accent to the í which changed the pronunciation from {DEZ-a-ray} to {DIZ-ea-ray}. How they came across this specific pronunciation I don’t know and am very sad that I don’t have the opportunity anymore to quiz them about this.
The name is French derived from Latin Desiderata ‘desired’. This name was given by early Christians to a longed-for child, but the French form is now often taken as suggesting that the bearer will grow into a ‘desirable’ woman.
The ‘longed-for child’ is actually very apt from my foster parents’ point of view. My foster mom and dad only had one biological daughter. My mom gave birth to a second child, a boy, who only survived for a few days. Following this my mom had numerous miscarriages and they obviously yearned for more children. So it was then that they adopted me (at the age of 3½) many years later, late in their forties and chose to name me Desíre which means ‘desired’ i.e. their desire to have another child.
Some more interesting facts:
There are 15 variant forms of Desirée: Desarae, Desaree, Deseray, Desideria, Desir, Desirae, Desirat, Desiray, Desire, Desirea, Desiri, Desyre, Dezirae, Deziray and Deziree. Mine is probably the 16th variant form i.e. Desíre
The English form of DÉSIRÉE was popularized in the English-speaking world by the movie 'Désirée' in 1954.
A Desiree is also a red-skinned potato.
There is also the song DESIREE written by Neil Diamond during the 1970’s.
There was also a Desiree Clary, a French woman who became Queen of Sweden. She was once the fiancée of Napoleon but they broke off the engagement due to parental opposition. Her husband (Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte) was one of Napoleon's generals and he was elected King of Sweden. The Swedes wanted a soldier as king due to the threat of a Russian invasion. During the early part of her husband's reign, she refused to live in Sweden due to the harsh climate. She moved to Sweden in her later life but never learned Swedish.
******************
If you are blessed to still have your parents around, don't forget to ask them how they decided on your first name(s). After all, your name is who you are ... it's your identity during your short life here on earth.

ALISHA TURNS 4: THE PARTY
Sunday, 20 July 2008

Heidi and Bernhardt moved into their new home, situated in Xanadu Eco Estate, Hartbeespoort Dam, during February this year and it was our first visit since they moved in. What better way of viewing their glorious new home than celebrating their daughter Alisha’s 4th birthday. The weather fairies were out in full force, showering the party guests with the blessings of the most beautiful sunny winter’s day.

It were not only the weather fairies, but the baby fairies also joined in, blessing Heidi and Bernhardt with a third bambino being on the way. So soon Alisha and Zander will have a brand new baby sister or brother to play with.
Zander
On arrival it was very noticeable that Alisha and her friends were oblivious of all the grown ups and more into all the yummy sweets and viewing interesting Walt Disney movies. The grown up party goers had serious fun enjoying the delicious party spread from their very own pink cups and plates.

Front: Lize & Deon with their daughter Zeone, Liesl with Zander and Conroy, yours truly behind the camera

The highlight of the day was not necessarily Alisha opening all her exciting gifts, but Conroy’s ego needing some ointment and a band aid. Whilst decapitating one of the fairy cupcakes the plastic garden chair’s legs gave way under him and he crashed unceremoniously to the ground, but nevertheless keeping the cupcake in one hand. The moment was just too big for yours truly to capture this event on camera …

Later in the afternoon, Heidi, her sister Liesl, Conroy, Alisha, Zander and Zeone took a stroll down to the lake to see whether there’s perhaps an interesting spot for us to take some pics of me, Heidi and Liesl together. The sun was very bright and there were no shade available under huge trees. We picked a spot on top of a rock amongst some beautiful ‘Afrikaner’ daisies (I think it was). This was not the perfect lighting condition, but we did manage one or two nice pics.

Heidi was quite concerned about us tramping on the flowers around the rock. Conroy the flower connoisseur (I wish) assured Heidi that the flowers will stand up straight again the next morning … Heidi was it the case?? Apparently the Xanadu estate management has very strict rules and conditions. My point of view is that one can always plant a flower again, but will never be able to capture the exact same moment in time.

Whilst I had the camera on a tripod and utilised the self-timer function to get myself in the picture with Heidi and Liesl, the resident Crèche Supervisor kept a close tab on all the bambinos. Isn’t this a precious photo?

Xanadu Eco Estate is not your normal built up estate. Nature plays a big part and there are quite a bit of wildlife roaming around freely amongst the houses. The zebras often pay a visit to Heidi’s garden providing free fertilizer for the lawn. There are also quite a few bird hides from where one can view the vast array of birdlife.

THE BOOK OF ME (BOM)

{Challenge No.1}
Yes, you won't believe it, but yours truly is at last taking part in a challenge. This is, however, a very special challenge. Us scrappers always seem to do layouts with photographs we took of other people and we end up never featuring on any of our layouts. The same goes for the journaling ... we hardly journal about ourselves. So this is where the importance of the 'Book of Me' (BOM) Challenge lies in that we are allowed to scrap and journal about ourselves and leave a personal legacy for those generations to follow in our footsteps. At least we would have lived life here on earth, leaving a small part of ourselves behind.
So this is my INTRODUCTORY page to my BOM:
The Introduction to myself reads:
Maiden Name Van Tonder Born 7 May 1964 In Port Elizabeth South Africa Parents
Never knew my biological parents. I was in an orphanage till the age of 3½ when I was adopted by Roelof & Phoebe Walters. Siblings
I don’t have any biological siblings. My adoptive parents had a daughter of their own who passed away in January 2008. Marital Status
I have been happily married to Conroy for nearly 24 years. We don’t have any bambinos as yet. Residence At present we are residing at Fernridge Estate, Fourways, Johannesburg. Career
I have been a fulltime PA and bookkeeper for 23 years. At present I am self-employed as a Scrapbooking Teacher and have founded and manage an online scrapbooking shop i.e. Doing Life’s Online Shoppe.
It is not too late to start participating in this challenge. Pop over to Tracy's blog and register.

LADIES CLUB GOING SCRAPPY - Saturday, 28 June 2008

From left to right: Michelle, Louise, Liesl, Brenda and Leoni

My sister's youngest daughter, Liesl (think this makes Liesl my niece ... never know the correct English relative names) and her girlfriends have got a Ladies Club going. It is quite a nice arrangement where the girls try out something different once a month. From learning a new craft to belly dancing. July 2008 was the month the girls decided to get familiar with scrapping photographs and yours truly was Tha Teacha.

Liesl arrived on Saturday morning sighing a sigh of relief after having had to babysit Zander and Alisha, Heidi her sister's two toddlers. I must say, it can be quite daunting for someone who does not have kids of her own to babysit ... I can wholeheartedly relate to Liesl's exhaustion. So there was lots of excuses coming from Liesl i.e. had no time to put make up on, my hair is a mess and my clothes just thrown on ... ja, ja, ja Liesl, take it from me, you don't have to do anything to yourself as you are a natural beauty.

Liesl and her four girlfriends got the drill down on the basics of scrapping i.e. what is allowed and what not, etc. The girls all had to bring photos for the 'CUTE AS CAN BE' layout which is also selling in kit format on Doing Life's Online Shoppe http://www.doinglife.co.za/. None of them had done any scrapping previously and I must say they were really excellent first time scrappers, very neat as well.

Apart from the scrap lesson, the girls really got down to some nice chatting and catching up on every one's doings. Obviously there were also quite a few tea breaks. So the 'Cute as can Be' kit which usually takes about 3 hours to scrap, took just under 6 hours to complete ... a good indication of all the fun that was happening on the side. Michelle, I hope that you were not offended with all the teasing from Tha Teacha's side ... you are just such a nice person to tease ... looked like you did take it in your stride.

Hopefully the 5-some will have another attempt at scrapping in the not too distant future.

Thanks girls, it was such a pleasure to have you round. All of you are such good natured girls. - Tha Teacha Signing Off
