Joining 36 Squares into 9 Squares of 4
{Repeat below creating another 8 big squares}





STITCHES USED

chain (ch)

standing single crochet (ssc)

slip stitch (sl st)

single crochet (sc)
(put hook in space pull up loop and pull through both loops on hook)
half double crochet (hdc) (put wool around, put hook in space pull up a loop and pull through all three loops on hook)

half double crochet (hdc)
(put wool around, put hook in space pull up a loop, pull through all 3 loops on hook)

double crochet (dc)
(put wool around, put hook in space pull up a loop, pull through first 2 loops on hook and then pull through last 2 loops on hook)

Fasten off (fo)

A) JOINING OF 4 SQUARES

1. Put 2 squares with wrong sides together.
2. Create a standing single crochet (ssc) and leave it to one side off the hook.
3. Put hook through corner spaces of front and back square.
4. Now put the ssc onto the hook and pull the ssc through the back and front square.
5. Pull the short end and the long end of the wool through the ssc now do 1ch just with the long end of the wool.









6. Do a sc in the top of the very first hidden stitch of the front and back squares together, catching both loops.
7. Continue doing single crochets through the top of the next 17 stitches of the front and back squares.
8. Do the 20th sc in the corner spaces of the front and back square.
9. Put another 2 squares with wrong sides together.
10. Continue by doing a sc in the corner space of the second set of front and back squares.
11. Then do a sc in the top of the very first hidden stitch of the second set of front and back squares.
12. Continue doing single crochets through the top of the next 17 stitches of the second set of front and back squares.
13. Do the 40th sc in the corner spaces of the front and back square.
14. Fasten off (fo).






15. Repeat 2 to 14 (omitting 9) above joining the second side in the same fashion.
Work away ends.


B) BORDER AROUND 4 JOINED SQUARES

1st Round (Solid Colour)
In any corner space, 2ch up and do a hdc+1ch+2hdc into the same space. Do a hdc into the top of the next 17 stitches. Do the 18th and 19th hdc into the corner spaces of joined squares and continue with the 20th to the 36th hdc into the top of the stitches. Do 2hdc+1ch+2hdc into the corner spaces and 36hdc on each side. (40 stitches per side).
Finishing with a slip stitch join between the 2ch up and first hdc.





2nd Round (Variegated Colour)
In any corner space, 2ch up and do a hdc+1ch+2hdc into the same space. Do a hdc into the next space between the two corner hdc of previous round.
ch1 and skip one space and do hdc into next space between stiches, continue and do a hdc into the space between the two corner hdc of previous round. 2hdc+1ch+2hdc into next corner space.
(20hdc and 19 ch1 spaces per side and 2hdc+1ch+2hdc in corners)
Finishing with a slip stitch join in the top of the 2ch up. DO NOT fasten off.




3rd Round (Variagated Colour)
Do another sl st into the ch1 corner space. 2ch up +1dc+1ch+2dc into the same corner space. 1dc into each of the next 2 spaces. 2dc into each ch1 space of previous round and end each side with 1dc in each of the two spaces before the corner.
(42dc per side and 2dc+1ch+2dc in corners)
Finishing with a slip stitch join in the top of the 2ch up. DO NOT fasten off.





4th Round (Variagated Colour)
Do another sl st into the ch1 corner space. 2ch up +1dc +1ch+2dc into the same corner space. 1dc into each of the next 2 spaces. Skip 2dc and do 2dc into next space. Continue skipping 2dc of previous round and do 2dc in between sets of 2dc from previous round and end each side with 1dc in each of the two spaces before the corner.
(44dc per side and 2dc+1ch+2dc in corners)
Finishing with a slip stitch join in the top of the 2ch up. DO NOT fasten off.



5th Round (Variagated Colour)
Do another sl st into the ch1 corner space. 2ch up +1dc+1ch+2dc into the same corner space. Skip one space and do 2dc into the next space. Continue skipping 2dc of previous round and do 2dc in between sets of 2dc from previous round and end each side with 2dc in corner space.
(46dc per side and 2dc+1ch+2dc in corners)
Finishing with a slip stitch join between the 2ch up and first dc. Fasten off.



6th Round (Solid Colour)
Join with solid colour in any corner space and do 2ch up+1hdc+1ch+2hdc in corner. Do a hdc into the top of the next 49 stitches on each side. **Do 2hdc+1ch+2hdc into the corner space and 49 hdc in the top of the next 49 stitches.** Repeat ** to ** twice more.
(49hdc per side and 2hdc+1ch+2hdc in corners)
Fasten off. Work away ends.
